While we were removing the existing pool, I created a Pin Board in Pinterest so that Kay and I could share ideas about the deck designs we liked. During this time, everything was fair game. We would see a particular deck or even a particular feature and we would send it to our shared Pinboard.

This went on for several weeks and we would talk about what we liked and didn’t like over our morning coffee. Pinterest was a great way to curate ideas and narrow down our design plans.

I also used Pinterest to gather details about deck design – stairs, railing, plumbing, etc. I built hundreds of pools while in high school and college so I had a good idea of how to build a pool. I have also built several decks, but nothing as extensive as what we had planned. Not to mention a lot of new techniques, tools, and technology were now available to build decks compared to years past.
Sketching ideas on iPad
Once we had a general idea of what we wanted the pool and deck to look like, I started sketching some ideas on my iPad that I could share with Kay. I knew that I would be designing the deck in my 3D modeling software but wanted to create some quick hand sketches to discuss ideas before I started investing time in modeling the deck on my computer.
